Does your organisation value Lessons Learned?
One of the first things I do when looking to understand an organisations delivery culture is to take a peak at their approach to Lesson Learned.
You can tell a lot about an organisation by the way it approaches the idea of continuous learning from projects that have gone before.
Lessons Learned in a project context are gifts of hard-earned wisdom, born out of experience from costly mistakes and seized opportunities. They normally come wrapped up in organisational context and tied up neatly with strong insight.
A while back I asked an organisation I was helping, where I could find their Lessons Learned Register. The PMO representative joked that they collected lots of lessons learned in the past and viewed them all as a gift, so much so they filed them in the “Round Filing Cabinet” aka the bin for safekeeping.
3 easy tips to promote a Lessons Learned culture
1) Promote the inclusion of 2-3 relevant Lessons Learned in all new Business Case
2 Ensure Lessons Learned are captured throughout the lifecycle not just at the end
3) Have an easily accessible repository and agreed on format for capturing them.
