A while ago I watched an organisation carry out a project pipeline prioritisation.
The Executive Leadership Team unanimously agreed on their strategic targets and measures, they universally agreed on the different weightings set for each target. They collectively decided to get each project reviewed to determine its alignment to the strategic targets and how much each project individually contributed. Finally, they ran their prioritisation tool over their pipeline based on the above information.
When it came to the session for the ELT to review the prioritisation output, the room erupted with discord “how could this project be below that project, how could this one be left out, “why is Dave’s project in and mine out”….
Their conclusion, “the process must be broken”, so they went back to handpicking the ones they each individually wanted most……
