Project Maturity Matters
March, 2021 – Guy Thorpe – (3 min read)
Something has been troubling me about Project Management maturity.
It’s not new news that project failure rates have been static for some time & #transformation programme success rates are a paltry 30%.
Unfortunately, low maturity organisations are twice as likely to experience project failures (21%) as those of High Maturity organisations (11%).
It’s also no surprise that maturity matters, what is interesting though is how many orgs respond to growing their project maturity with many opting for:
· More process
· More governance
· More tools or systems
But what is clearly missing in the equation is people. Without capable & confident project people to drive these aspects, they are all simply pixels and paper.
Perhaps better questions orgs could be asking themselves about increasing project maturity would be;
What if we doubled down on building the capability of our teams through coaching, training, and community learning?
How can we embed a competency framework that clearly outlines a roadmap for skills elevation for PMs, #Sponsors and #PMO’s alike?
How might we make project skills development one of our key orgs metrics for success?
For the betterment of project management, we all benefit from growing the competence & capabilities of people first.
