The Power of Retrospectives
March, 2021 – Guy Thorpe – (3 min read)
I recently experienced the power that “retrospectives” can bring to a team, here’s what happened….
I have introduced retro’s every two weeks as part of building agility into a PMO’s way of working. In a recent retro, one of the team members reflected that they found having done a few retros now with the team they were starting to be more descriptive with each post-it note. In the past, they were one-word answers on a scrap of paper but now they were becoming more expressive.
When I probed a bit more, they said that they wouldn’t normally express how they were truly feeling with the team as they thought they needed to bring a strong, focused, and professional personality to their work. But retro’s were giving them space and an opportunity to consider how they were actually ‘feeling’ rather than responding with a perceived appropriate business answer.
It was awesome to see that the retros were creating a culture of team trust and providing an opportunity for people to bring their “whole-self” to their work rather than leaving their personality at the door on the way in.
