The Words We Choose Matter...

The words we choose to use matter….
In the Project Management arena, we love nothing more than throwing around terminology that relates to the technical things we do. Lob in a Risk Honestates here a MoSCoW method there, finish it all up with an Analogous Estimating and you most likely have a confused audience.
There is a term for it ….Sesquipedalian..”someone or something that overuses big words” (ironic that its a big word itself)
A while ago, I remember vividly talking to a room full of stakeholders about how we were utilising “Portfolio Efficient Frontiers”.
Unfortunately, I quickly lost the room and I saw a number of people begin to look at their phones or talk quietly amongst themselves instead!
Perhaps with a bit of forethought, I could have accessed the audience and said instead “We are going to look at a bunch of different project portfolio options based on different levels of risk”….job done!
There is an art to being able to explain complex concepts and ideas in plain everyday language. As a project profession perhaps we could do well to create a greater understanding of the complex world we navigate daily by being careful with the words we choose to explain it.
What do you think?
