Every time I hear the words “Development Opportunity” I shudder, here’s why…
When I was a young Project professional, I was voluntold that I was joining an already established Project Team and it would be a great “Development Opportunity”.
Keen to impress the Senior Manager, I jumped in without much thought.
The project was a total dumpster fire from the get-go.
The Sponsor had ghosted the project team for 6 months, the PM was out of their depth and suppliers were running wild. The project team was dejected and pointing fingers at who to blame.
When I turned for help from the Senior Manager who sold me said “Development Opportunity”, he was gone, literally nowhere to be found.
The #project battled on aimlessly for a few months and it nearly crushed my interest in projects completely. Fortunately, the project came to an abrupt halt.
One of the lessons for me was that Senior Project Professionals owe it to those under their stewardship to demonstrate true mentorship by showing up, providing guidance, and encouragement to help them problem solve.
Don’t sell them on a “Development Opportunity” and then bail on them, they deserve better…
